Episode #30: The Trial of Reverend Richard Rossi

Summary of the Episode:

On June 24th, 1994, Reverend Richard Rossi and his wife Sherrie were traveling in separate vehicles. What happened next is up for debate, but ended with Sherrie severely beaten and fighting for her life. Richard would flee the seen and wind up a mile away, and ask a stranger to call 911. He would tell police that a man got into his wife’s car and took off with her, and that when Richard caught up with them, Sherrie was outside the car being beaten and she told her husband to run for his life.

After awaking from her coma, Sherrie would accuse Richard of having been the one to nearly kill her. Richard would deny this, and his congregation would stand behind him. Sherrie moved forward with separating from her husband and filing a restraining order. But not longer after, Sherrie would recant her story and claim it was someone who looked like Richard who had attacked her, but that Richard had not done it. Despite Sherrie turning, the prosecution pursued the case. The first trial ended in a mistrial. Before the second trial began, a plea deal was reached, and Richard plead no contest to lesser charges. He served several months in jail before returning home to his wife and children and eventually pursuing an acting career. Sherrie Rossi wrote a book about her ordeal, and Richard has authored several books as well.

  1. Thanks for doing a researched and thorough job on this case. I am a native Pittsburgher and was around when it happened and attended services presided over by Rev. Rossi. I believe strongly in Rev. Rossi’s innocence. He was never accused of violence or a crime before or since this incident. His wife, the victim, testified in the trial he wasn’t her attacker, so he should never have been tried. He was unfairly persecuted and prosecuted.
Sherrie is married with him 35 plus years to this day and she wouldn’t have stayed with him 25 years after the incident if this was true. Sherrie also wrote a book with evidence proving her husband’s innocence. Also, I knew many people Rev. Rossi helped and was kind to. Richard and Sherrie are both beautiful people. Richard is one of the kindest people I’ve met. I believe without doubt he is 1000 percent innocent. He was confronting sex traffickers and corrupt cops in his sermons and radio shows and the bad guys retaliated against him. Thanks for your balanced presentation, Erin Fawcett
