Episode #1: Jodi Arias and the Murder of Travis Alexander
Summary of the case:
In 2006, Jodi and Travis met at a business conference. Jodi was living with her boyfriend, but she soon broke things off and she and Travis became serious. However, they had an on again off again relationship, and despite Jodi even converting to Mormonism for Travis, the couple eventually broke up for good. In May 2008, Jodi planned a trip from her home in California to visit a new love interest Utah. And a week later, concerned friends would find the body of Travis Alexander, brutally murdered in his own bathroom. At first Jodi would claim she had not been there, but evidence such as photographs placed her at the crime scene. She then claimed she had been there, but that two assailants broke in and killed Travis. When she stood trial in 2013, she then presented a new story: that she had killed Travis, but in self-defense. In May 2013, Jodi was found guilty of murder, and is currently serving a life sentence without parole.
What set this case apart was the horrific nature of the crime, the self-assuredness of the perpetrator (as seen in mugshot above), and her ever-changing story and circus of a trial.
While awaiting trial, Arias gave several interviews, which are now infamous. In one interview, we can see her concerned about her makeup before letting the film roll. In another, she boldly states, “no jury will ever convict me“. Police also released hours of footage from her interrogation, where she acts oddly, such as singing to herself and performing yoga.
Even though Arias has gotten most of the media attention due to her outlandish behavior, it is important to remember Travis, who lost his life. He is greatly missed by his family and community, and was a soulful writer, who had plans to release a book with the hopes to inspire others. His personal blog can be seen here.
